About the Club

Ashbourne St. Andrew’s A.C. is an Athletics Club serving Ashbourne and surrounding areas. The club is based in Greenogue K67 HH27 where we have a six-lane all-weather floodlit track, facilities for track and field events and a clubhouse with changing facilities. Our adult and juvenile members train on Mondays and Wednesdays – training times are below. Ashbourne St. Andrew’s A.C. is an Athletics Ireland registered club.

We have more than 200 registered members from age 8 and upwards. Our club members have represented Ireland in sprinting, cross-country, throwing, high-jump and race walking.

Our juvenile members participate in running, long-jump, high-jump, hurdles and throwing disciplines and our adult members love to run and do throwing events. We welcome children aged 8 or above and all adults regardless of running ability or age.  There will be a group to suit everybody!

We regularly run 8-week adult courses as follows:

  • Couch to 5K Course – this is for total beginners, lapsed runners or improvers. We mix walking with jogging and gradually over the weeks the running distance lengthens in line with your own pace and ability.
  • 5K to 10K Course – this is for anybody who can run a 5K reasonably comfortably without stopping and would now like to progress to 10K runs or races.
  • Half Marathon Course – this is for advanced runners who can run at least 10K reasonably comfortably and would now like to take on a half marathon. This course also suits anybody who wants to improve their speed for half or full marathons as we will mix aerobic training with speed sessions to improve both our speed and endurance.

History of the Club

Our club was founded on September 13th 1955 in Fairyhouse Racecourse, Ratoath. The club moved to our grounds in Greenogue in 1964. In 1968 we had the official opening of our Pavilion building. The building was named the Arkle Pavilion after the famous racehorse who made a guest appearance at a fundraising event for our club 2 years earlier!

We initially had a grass track but after many years of fundraising, we constructed a flood-lit, all-weather 400m track in the late 1990s.

After more than 40 years, the Arkle Pavilion was replaced with our new clubhouse in 2007 which is widely used to this day.

Our involvement with the local community includes hosting the annual community games, facilitating local TY students who are participating in the Gaisce Awards and forging links with local charities and other local clubs.
